When we started our restaurant business 18 months ago we decided to use words of mouth as the central marketing tool for our restaurant business. We did it because we didn’t really have any money for advertising and we never really believed that starting a restaurant niche blog  would work for us. We used the blog as the main means of our advertisement and only had one commodity on our hands to make it a success….time.

It’s been a long journey opening a restaurant but 18 months later we now get 250,000 page views to our site per month, in the last year we have brought in over N500,000 in business as a direct result of the blog and the restaurant business operates in 2 cities (Port Harcourt and Lagos) and our content has been picked up all over the world. We’ve largely used social media to promote the blog and grow that audience and today I wanted to share some of those guidelines with you on how to start a restaurant and even though you might not have a blog attached to your restaurant  business you’ll hopefully gain some good insights in to what works for running a restaurant ….

How To Start A Restaurant Business Even If You Don’t Like Cooking

When you have the passion for quality food and you like to share your cooking to a broader audience, then opening a restaurant may just be the thing for you. However, the food industry business is highly competitive and there is a lot at stake if you want to make this venture succeed. To learn more about how to open a restaurant, look to the points listed below for further guidance.

Perhaps the greatest challenge you must surmount in this undertaking on how to start a restaurant is acquiring the necessary funds to pay for all costs. Set aside your design ideas of furnishing a good looking restaurant booths in the meantime and focus first on getting the money you need to kick-start your goals. Solutions may vary depending on your preference, from approaching wealthy investors to taking out a bank loan.

Everything begins and ends with a brilliant plan, and restaurants are no exception to this adage. You must conceive of a comprehensive outline and business strategy that details all that you need to do and what you hope to accomplish. If you intend on convincing potential investors to give you that much needed backing, then you should have this step perfected before you present it to them.

Another vital priority that you should take care of as soon as possible is producing a delicious menu of dishes. When you have a specific cuisine in mind, research some recipes which fall under that culinary style and test them out in your kitchen to see if they work or not. The success of your potential dining business depends on serving food that customers will love and have reasons to go back for more.

The best restaurants always have a good selection of drinks aside from their food options. That being said, you must curate your drink menu by featuring some nice bottled wines. Alternatively, you may have the option of providing other alcoholic beverages for as long as you are able to get an approved liquor license, which may be a mandatory requirement for businesses selling and serving alcohol in some locality.

Hiring the best staff can make or break your restaurant business because customer service is considered one of the major cornerstones of a successful establishment. Never settle for just anyone to take control over your dining room or kitchen. Be prudent and discerning with your staffing choices and pick the best candidates with the experience and knowledge of working in a restaurant environment.

One of the secrets to pulling off a successful restaurant establishment is partnering with the best providers. This means patronizing a certain home furnishings outlet for decorations or affiliating yourself with local restaurants or an organic market so you could get the best deals for fresh ingredients. Locate these valuable sources and you shall reap the rewards for being a discerning restaurateur.

And lastly, paying attention to the little details is vital because you should never underestimate the capability of a diner to spot even the tiniest of mistakes. From the way the dining room is decorated to how the food is presented on the plate, everything must be in complete harmony. Your job is to ensure that such details are perfected before opening your doors to the general public.

For sure, there will be challenges that you will encounter along the way, but they are not impossible to overcome. And as long as you heed the advice mentioned here, you are surely primed for success. Above all, stay positive and learn from your mistakes as you go along.
